TALLAHASSEE, Fla - The Troy Trojans softball swept the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers on Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans took game one 7-1 and then grabbed a shutout victory in game two, 4-0.
“I was really proud of how our girls played today, “Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. “We came out and hit the ball well, and we needed a day like this.”
The Trojans (34-17) jumped out to a hot start in the first inning of game one with four runs. Troy added one in the second and third innings to add to their commanding lead and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as they secured the win.
FAMU's (19-29) lone run came in the bottom half of the third inning.
“We kept their slap game off balance which has been a strong suit for them,” Davis said. “For the most part we played good ball in all three phases of the game.”
Ashlyn Williams pitched for the Trojans. She allowed five hits and no earned runs. The sophomore walked three and struck out five.
Kala Moore, Hillary Hughes and Sarah Harris led the Trojans at the plate with two hits each. Harris was two-for-two on the day, Moore was two-for-three and Hughes was two-for-four.
Hughes had a first inning home run, and Davis said that built up momentum for the entire day.
“She really got things going there for us right off the bat,” Davis said.
Sarah Shields, Felicia Hammer, Katie Ely and Hayden Gann posted hits in the game as well.
The Trojans momentum carried into game two also.
Allison Moore took the mound for Troy and held the Lady Rattlers to four hits in the shutout victory. The senior struck out six and walked just one.
“I was pleased with our pitching in both games,” Davis said. “Allison had a good day on the mound for us, and a shutout always boosts the confidence of a pitcher.”
Moore's pitching was backed by an array of hits from the Trojans' bats. Troy posted 11 hits in the game highlighted by a home run from Hayden Gann and doubles from Tasha Elmore and Sarah Shields.
The Trojans posted a run in the first inning and held on to a 1-0 lead until the sixth inning. Troy added two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.
Sarah Shields led all batters in the game going three-for-three. Hayden Gann and Kala Moore were both two-for-four in the game. Hillary Hughes, and Felicia Hammer both added hits as well.
“We really just needed a good day of hitting the ball well, and I feel like that's what we got here today,” Davis said.
The Trojans will look to continue their momentum this Friday as they play host to in-state rival UAB.
