Trojans Fare Well in First Round at SBC Championship

HOUSTON, Texas ? The Troy University golf teams both got off to a good start at the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championships on Monday at Cypresswood Golf Club.
The Troy women got off to a great start, shooting an opening round score of 312 and stand fifth in the 11-team event heading into Tuesday's second round. The Trojans are just eight shots out of second place.
Defending conference champion Denver posted te best round on Monday with a five-over par score of 293. The Pioneers are 11 shots in front of second place Middle Tennessee.
Troy's top performers on Monday were junior Desirae Zine (Vaccaville, Calif.) and freshman Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) who shot matching scores of 77, and stand tied for 15th place at five-over par.
Denver's Sarah Faller has a one shot lead over a trio of players after posting an opening round score of one-under par 71.
All five Trojans who are playing in the championship posted scores that ranked among the top 40 in the field. Junior Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.) stands in a tie for 22nd after an opening round score of six-over 78.
Freshman Nikki Crowley (Phenix City, Ala.) is tied for 31st place after an opening round score of eight-over par 80. Sophomore Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) is tied for 40th after an opening round score of 82.
The Trojans will continue play in the three-day event today with tee times starting at 9:55 a.m. on the Cypress Course. Troy's players will be paired with players from Arkansas State and Florida Atlantic, who enter play on Tuesday one and two shots back of Troy, respectively.

South Alabama leads the field after posting a team score of 283, five-under par, on Monday. The Jaguars have a seven shot lead over the second place teams.
Senior Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.) and junior Chase Whitehead (Eufaula, Ala.) were the top performers on the first day of the event for Troy. Parker and Whitehead posted matching scores of two-over par score 74 and are tied for 20th overall, five shots behind tournament leader Jack Hiluta of South Alabama. Hiluta fired an opening round score of three-under par 69 and has a one-shot lead over five players.
Sophomore Reid Merritt (Slocomb, Ala.) and senior Jay Harris (Killen, Ala.) are one shot further back, tied for 30th overall, after posting scores of three-over par 73 in the first round. Freshman Rourke Van Der Spuy (Bluff, KwaZuluNatal, South Africa) shot an opening round score of 79 and is tied for 49th in the 60-player field at seven-over par.
The Trojans open play in the second round this morning at 9:15 a.m., paired with players from North Texas and ULL.
