LAFAYETTE, La. - The Troy Trojans softball team was swept on the road by the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette this weekend.
Troy lost the remainder of the delayed Saturday game 9-1, and the Trojans fell in nine innings in the third game of the series, 4-3.
The Ragin' Cajuns took the second game of the series with a run-rule victory. ULL led 3-1 when the game resumed play on Sunday. Lightning and rain forced the game to be delayed from Saturday afternoon.
ULL scored a quick run in the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns followed that by loading the bases, and Christi Orgeron homered to center field. The grand slam virtually put the game out of reach for Troy, and then an RBI single from Karli Hubbard ended the game with the ninth run.
Allison Moore pitched the length of the game for the Trojans in game two of the series. She allowed nine hits and three walks. She struck out one batter.
Donna Bourgeois got the win for the Ragin' Cajuns. She struck out three, walked three and allowed two hits in the game.
Game two played out to a different tune than the first, but the outcome was just the same.
ULL got on the board first in the bottom half of the second inning with a home run from Lana Bowers.
The Trojans responded with a homer of their own from Hillary Hughes. Hughes' homer drove in Sarah Shields, and the Trojans took the lead.
Troy added another run in the fourth inning. Kaitlin Kenney singled, and Shields followed by getting on base from a Ragin' Cajun error. The error moved Kenney to second, and a Jackie Di Siervi single down the right field line scored her from second.
The Trojans led 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning. ULL tied the game with two runs. Christi Orgeron led off the inning with a homer, and the Ragin' Cajuns manufactured a run to tie the game.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth inning. ULL loaded the bases, and a Cajun single ended the game.
Ashlyn Williams got the start on the mound for Troy. The sophomore struck out two batters and allowed 13 hits and walked six.
Brittany Cuevas got the win for ULL, but Bourgeois got the nod to start the game. Bourgeois pitched one inning and struck out one batter. She allowed three hits. Cuevas came in to finish the game and allowed four hits and three runs. Cuevas struck out 11 batters in the game, and retired 16 consecutive batters at one point in the game.
The sweep gives the Trojans six consecutive Sun Belt losses. The Trojans last Sun Belt action comes against South Alabama at home on May 2.
