Troy Wins in Delayed First Round Match

DENTON, Texas ? In a rain-soaked first round of action in the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships, the fifth-seeded Troy Trojans women's tennis team took a delayed match over No. 12 Florida Atlantic, 4-0.
In a match that was scheduled to be played on Friday morning, the Trojans and Owls didn't complete their match at the Goldfield Tennis Center until 9:30 p.m.
The Trojans started things off on the right foot by sweeping the doubles point with wins at numbers one and two. First, at number one, the Trojans duo of Rawia Elsisi and Leonie Guijt defeated Virginia Augustin and Dominique Wimmer, 8-1. Next, Stephanie Vieira and Mirte De Bakker defeated FAU's Danielle Simone and Erika Mrazkova at number two, 8-5.
As the match moved to singles play, the Trojans needed just three wins to advance to quarterfinals and they got them, but they weren't easy. Three of the six singles matches went to three sets.
First, at number four, Troy's Guijt defeated Mrazkova in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. The next decision came at three were Trojan senior Annabelle Bares defeated FAU's Wimmer, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
The Trojans clinched the match at number two singles where De Bakker convincingly defeated Simone, 6-3, 6-4.
The three remaining matches were as follows:
1. Elsisi vs. Natalia Totevska, 6-7 (5-7), 2-3, unfinished
5. Vieira vs. Augustin, 0-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0, unfinished
6. Caroline Joaunin vs. Cassie Bergeson (FAU) 2-6, 7-5, 1-4, unfinished
"It was a war out there tonight," said head coach Eric Hayes, "Although the score was 4-0, the match was tougher than that score shows."
The victory gives the Trojans(13-6) 10 wins in their last 11 matches, including three straight.
The Trojans will now take on host North Texas in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The above link shows a complete bracket with revised times due to Friday's delays and cancellations.
