LAFAYETTE, La. - The Troy Trojans softball team will have to wait until Sunday to redeem a game-one loss to the #25 Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. The Trojans fell in game one 4-2.
The second game of the Saturday double-header began, but lightning and rain delayed the remainder of the game to Sunday at noon. Game three will follow at 2 pm.
"It's kind of an unusual situation we're in here with a rain delay in the middle of a series like this," Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. "We're hoping to come out tomorrow and make some things happen against a quality ULL defense and pitching staff."
Allison Moore took the mound for Troy against Donna Bourgeois, and through one inning of play the Trojans trailed 3=1. Bourgeois is probable to start every game for the Ragin' Cajuns.
ULL got on the board first in game one, and the Ragin' Cajuns never relinquished the lead in the victory.
Heidi Johnson highlighted the Trojans at the plate in the game. Johnson homered to center field to start things off in the fifth inning. The yard shot put the Trojans on the board, but trailing 4-1.
"Heidi had a real good day for us at the plate," Davis said. "She had a good game in the first game, and she carried over to the start of game two. I was proud to see her come through in such a big way scoring both of our runs for us in game one."
Johnson scored the Trojans second and final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning in the comeback effort. The senior singled up the middle and was moved to second by a single from Sarah Shields. Hayden Gann followed by getting on a base in a fielder's choice situation. The Ragin' Cajuns threw out Shields at second, and Johnson was able to score on a ULL throwing error. The comeback fell short, and the Ragin' Cajuns took the win.
ULL scored two runs in the second inning and two runs more in the fourth.
"I was real pleased with how our team fought back in the game," Davis said.
Ashlyn Williams got the start on the mound for Troy in the series opener. The sophomore allowed nine hits in the game and struck out three. She walked three batters and allowed three earned runs in a complete game effort.
Bourgeois took the mound for the Ragin' Cajuns, and she too pitched all seven innings. She allowed four hits and two runs. The pitcher struck out eight and walked none.
