Senior Martinez Leads Trojans to Victory

TROY, Ala. ? The Troy University tennis teams took a pair of matches from Mercer University on Sunday afternoon, but not in normal fashion.
First, Mercer's women forfeited the match giving the Trojans the easy victory. The win gives Troy its second straight and nine out of the last ten. The Trojans move to 11-6 on the season heading into next week's Sun Belt Conference Championships.
The men's win wasn't quite as easy, however the Trojans (8-11) did sweep the Bears, 7-0, in their last match before next week's conference tournament.
The highlight of the day for the Trojans was without a doubt senior Diego Martinez. In his first match of the season, the Mexico City native won at number six singles in a super-tiebreak in his final career home match.
The Trojans started the match by winning two of the first three doubles matches. First, at number one, Mario Silva and Branko Weber defeated the Bear's Fernando Armendaris and Chapman Mitchell, 8-3. Then, at number two, Troy's Benjamin Chomette and Bastian Maucher defeated Dave Barton and Adam Hunt, 8-4.
Troy's lone loss on the day came at number three doubles where Troy's senior Martinez and freshman Xavier Masson played together for the first time all season and loss to Mercer's (8-14) Victor Dias and Justin Wimpee, 8-6.
The Trojans swept the Bears in singles play starting with Aurelien Tave defeating Wimpee at number one in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Next, at number four, Masson defeated Mercer's Dias, 6-0, 6-2.
The Trojans continued their winning ways at numbers three and five in straight sets. First, at number three, Chomette defeated Barton, 6-1, 6-3. Then, at number five, Silva defeated Mitchell, 6-2, 6-2.
The remaining two matches each went to super-tiebreakers. First, at number two Troy's Weber defeated Armendaris, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
The final match of the day went to Trojan senior Martinez, and the senior defeated Mercer's Hunt, 0-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-5).
The Trojans have won three straight heading into next weekend's Sun Belt Conference Championships, including six of their last eight.
