Denton, Tx - The Troy Trojans softball team fell twice against the Mean Green of North Texas in a Friday double-header.
The Mean Green grabbed the win in game one as they held the Trojans scoreless, 3-0. Game two was a comeback affair for the Mean Green as they won 7-3.
“We just didn't play as well as we should have in all three phases of the game,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. “We're going to have to come out tomorrow and play better, and we'll try to get a win out of the series.”
The scoreless game for Troy added to a streak of recent scoreless innings. The Trojans were held scoreless for 25 consecutive innings dating back to the third game of the Florida Atlantic series.
Ashlyn Williams started the game for the Trojans and got the loss. Williams pitched five innings and allowed five hits and three runs. Williams struck out six batters.
The Mean Green's Mariza Martinez sent her eighth homer of the season over the left field wall to put North Texas ahead in the game 3-0.
Monique Faul came in to relieve Williams. Faul's appearance in the game was just her third of the entire season. Faul finished out the game for the Trojans allowing one hit against four batters.
Tasha Elmore posted a double in the game. Kala Moore added a single.
Faul got the nod from Coach Davis in game two to take the mound for her first start of the season.
“I really felt like Monique matched up well against them so we decided to start her in game two,” Davis said.
Faul threw two innings in the game allowing three hits. One of the hits was another home run from Mariza Martinez.
The Trojans responded to the Martinez homer with a homer of their own. Tasha Elmore broke the Trojans 26 inning scoring drought and blasted a shot over the center field wall in the top of the second inning.
The Trojans started a new streak of scoring innings by adding another run in the third. Sarah Shields led off with a single, and a double from Hillary Hughes gave the Trojans the lead.
The streak continued into the fourth inning. Felicia Hammer singled with two outs in the inning. Rocky Paige followed with another single, and Sarah Shields added another single to load the bases.
But it wasn't another hit that scored the run. A Mean Green wild pitch advanced all runners and got Felicia Hammer across the plate for a 3-1 lead.
The Trojans scoring streak ended there, and the Mean Green would change the outlook on the game.
North Texas trailed Troy in the bottom of the fifth inning, and with two outs things looked promising for the Trojans. North Texas posted six runs in a comeback effort, and took the lead and the win.
“That was a very costly inning for us, and we're going to work hard so that something like that doesn't happen to us again,” Davis said.
Allison Moore pitched two and two-thirds innings. Moore allowed three hits, three runs and struck out one batter. Ashlyn Williams finished the game pitching one and a third innings. Williams allowed three hits, two runs and struck out three batters.
Troy fell to 30-13 with the two losses, 13-4 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Trojans are on a four game losing streak. North Texas improved to 23-18, 8-7 in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Trojans will face North Texas on Saturday at noon for game three of the series.
