TALLAHASSEE, Fla - The Troy Trojans softball team split Friday's games at the Florida State Invitational.
Troy got past Bethune-Cookman in extra innings,4-3, but the Trojans couldn't manage to score against Florida State. Florida State knocked off Troy 2-0.
“Florida State is a good team, and we just didn't hit the ball well,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said.
Ashlyn Williams started the game for Troy on the mound against the Seminoles. Williams struck out six in the game and allowed eight hits.
Florida State's lead off hitter, Carly Wynn, gave the Seminoles an early lead when she started the game with a home run.
FSU added another run in the sixth inning as well.
The Trojans first game of the day was tight until the finish as well.
“I was really proud of how we responded in the eighth inning against Bethune-Cookman,” Davis said.
The Trojans got on the board first in the game with a run in the first inning. BCU tied things up in the third, and Troy responded yet again. Bethune-Cookman tied the game again in the fourth inning, and later took the lead in the top of the eighth.
Troy responded when Heidi Johnson drove in the tie-breaking runner, Kala Moore, on what would have been a sac-fly to right field. The Tigers left fielder dropped the ball, and an error got Johnson on base at second.
A throwing error on the Cougars later scored Johnson for the win.
“I think it's always a good experience when we can win a close game,” Davis said. “We'll use both of these games to make us better as the season progresses.”
Troy will get a few more shots at the Seminoles later this season. FSU will play in Troy later this month, and the Trojans will host the Seminoles again in April.
Troy plays Liberty at 9 am on Saturday, and the Trojans will face Bethune-Cookman at 11 am.
