MOBILE, Ala. ? After two postponements last week due to rain, the Troy University tennis team and the Southeastern Louisiana Lions were finally able to match up in Mobile on Monday afternoon.
The Trojans (4-9) won the match by a score of 4-3 to capture their second victory in as many days. This is the second time in two years that the two squads have met with Southeastern Louisiana (6-8) winning last year 4-3.
The Trojans got things started in fine fashion by sweeping the doubles point and taking the early 1-0 lead. Benjamin Chomette and Bastian Maucher took care of the Lions' Alexis Biarneix and Damien Cordoba, 8-1, at number two.
Next, Branko Weber and Mario Silva defeated Stephen Siska and Benjamin Enke at number one, 8-3. Aurelien Tave and Xavier Masson beat Jan Bezdecka and Guillaume Capovin, 9-8, at number three to complete the doubles sweep.
As the match moved to singles play, Troy jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with wins at numbers six and one.
The Lions' Alexis Biarneix had to withdraw in the second set of his match with Troy's Guilherme Sahadi at number six due to injury. Sahadi picked up the point for the Trojans with a 6-1, 4-5 victory.
Next, at number one, Tave gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead by defeating Siska in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
With the Trojans only needing one more point for a victory, Southeastern Louisiana won the next two matches to get within one point at 3-2.
Enke got things started for the Lions with a three set victory over Troy's Weber at number two, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6. Next, at number four, Capovin defeated the Trojans' Silva, 7-6, 6-1, to pull the Lions within one point.
With the Lions on the comeback trail, the Trojans needed someone to step up, and that is exactly what freshman Xavier Masson did. After splitting the first two sets with the Lions' Bezdecka at number five, Masson posted an impressive third set and clinch the match for the Trojans by winning, 6-4, 5-7, 6-0.
With Masson's victory, the Trojans took a 4-2 lead and the match. The match concluded with Cordoba defeating Troy's Chomette at number three, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
With the victory on Monday, the Trojans have won their second match in as many days, and improved their record to 4-9.
The Trojans will look to continue their winning ways this weekend as they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to participate in the Sun Belt Conference Shootout. The tournament includes the top six teams in the Sun Belt and seeds will be announced on Thursday.
