Trojans Finish 9th At Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, SC ? The Troy University men's golf team finished 9th at the 40th Annual Furman Intercollegiate Tournament, played at the Furman University Golf Course.
The Trojans opened the weather-shortened event with a score of 302, leaving the team just six shots behind North Florida, which posted an eight-over par round of 296.
Troy, however, struggled during the second round on Sunday, posting a 28-over score of 316 to slip to 9th with an overall final score of 44-over par 620.
East Carolina University posted scores of 298-297 to finish at 19-over par, edging the host Paladins and Virginia Tech by one stroke. Furman followed an opening round score of 301 with a tournament low score of 295.
North Florida shot a second round score of 307 to slip to fourth (609), followed by Old Dominion (614), Wofford (614), Temple (617) and Winthrop (617).
Furman's Austin Reeves and Daniel Bowden tied for top individual honors, both posting final scores of one-over par 145. Reeves, who shot a tournament low round of six-under par 66 in the second round, took top honors in the tournament by winning a playoff against his teammate.
Junior Chase Whitehead (Eufaula, Ala.) was the top individual finisher for the Trojans. He opened with an even-par round of 72 before slipping to a score of 79 in the second round to fall into a tie for 16th.
Sophomore Reid Merritt (Slocomb, Ala.) finished one stroke back, with an eight-over par score of 152 in a tie for 20th place.
Seniors Jay Harris (Killen, Ala.), Michael McGrady (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.) all finished tied for 73rd in the tournament, finishing with matching scores of 15-over 179.
The event at Furman was the final tuneup for the Trojans before the Sun Belt Conference Championship. That event is scheduled for April 19-22 at the Cypresswood Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
