TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans softball team won both contests against the WKU Lady Toppers on Saturday in walk-off fashion.
“The last thing I said to the kids before the first pitch today was that some team would leave here today in sole possession of first place in the Conference, and we control our own destiny,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said.
That team would be the Trojans.
“I couldn't be more proud of them right now,” Davis said. “They showed toughness. They took charge and did a great job coming from behind in both games.”
The Trojans took game one with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman Sarah Harris led-off the inning, and she led the Trojans to victory by sending a yard shot deep over the left-center field wall.
The Trojans won the game 2-1.
“I'm very happy for Sarah,” Davis said. “She's a great kid who does everything right on and off the field and it's great to see her be a hero.”
The home run was the first of Harris' collegiate career.
“Coming from behind was a weakness of ours early in the year,” Davis said. “It just shows that we're getting stronger mentally.”
The second game ended in the ninth inning when Rocky Paige drove in Tasha Elmore from third base to win again, 2-1. Elmore got to third with a stand-up triple before scoring the winning run.
“If you look at the numbers, this team finds a way to win and sometimes it's not real pretty,” Davis said.
Ashlyn Williams took both wins for the Trojans on the mound. Williams pitched the distance in game one, allowing five hits and one run. She struck out seven and walked five in seven innings of work.
Allison Moore started game two for the Trojans. Moore pitched four innings, and allowed five hits and one run. She struck out three batters and walked one.
Williams saw her second action of the day in the fifth inning for the Trojans, when she came in to relieve Moore. The sophomore gave up two hits and struck out two batters en route to win number two on the day.
“I'm extremely proud of both Ashlyn and Allison,” Davis said. “Our pitching has been solid.”
Heidi Johnson hit a home run for the Trojans in game one to score the Trojans first run before the Harris walk-off.
Elmore posted a triple in game one as well as the triple in game two. Hillary Hughes and Paige both had doubles in game one. In game two, Nikki Hollett added a double.
The Trojans Saturday sweep secures them first place in the Sun Belt Conference to-date, with game three set for Sunday at 1pm.
