Trojans Looking To Stay On Top

NOTE: Saturday game times for Troy vs. Western Kentucky have been changed to 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. due to inclement weather that moved through the Troy area during the originally scheduled game times.
The Troy Trojans softball team currently sits atop first place in the Sun Belt Conference standings, and the Trojans are looking to defend their standing against the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers.
“They've had a good year thus far,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. “They are a solid team, and they are well coached. They have talent from top to bottom. We picked them in the top of the conference in the beginning of the season so we know they are talented.”
The Trojans (25-7, 8-1) enter the game after taking two-of-three last weekend against Florida International.
The Hilltoppers (17-6, 5-1) took two-of-three games on the road at 17th ranked Louisiana-Lafayette.
Troy swept the Hilltoppers last season, but Davis said the task was not easy.
“They are very good hitting team,” Davis said. “Last year we had to get into some hard slugfests with them. There were high scoring games between us last year, and that is very uncharacteristic for us. Were going to have to be poised and ready to perform on offense and be ready to step up and shutdown their power when we're on defense.”
Davis said the series against the Hilltoppers is very important for the Trojans. The Trojans are looking to take sole possession of the conference standings at the halfway point of Sun Belt play with a series victory against WKU.
“This is a big series,” Davis said. “We need tremendous home crowd support. They will have a lot of momentum after taking the series at ULL. We're going to have to play strong as we try to hold on to first place in the Sun Belt Conference.”
Game times are set for 1 and 3 pm on Saturday. Sunday's game is slated for 1p.m.
