MIAMI - The Troy Trojans split a pair of Saturday games with the FIU Golden Panthers.
The Trojans took the first game in dominant fashion with Ashlyn Williams allowing just one hit against the Golden Panthers. Williams also struck out 14 batters.
“Ashlyn had another stellar performance,” Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. “She shut down a very talented offensive team in FIU.”
The Trojans (24-7, 7-1) posted 13 hits in the game en route to a 7-1 victory against pitcher Kasey Barrett.
Troy scored three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. The Trojans added one in the third and fifth innings and two more in the seventh.
“Overall the team swung the bats extremely well,” Davis said. “We had another day of error free softball too. I couldn't ask for a better performance in game one.”
The Trojans had multiple batters with at least two hits in the game. Hayden Gann posted a two-for-two day at the plate. Hillary Hughes, Heidi Johnson, Tasha Elmore and Rocky Paige all posted two hits.
Johnson and Gann both scored two runs each. Hughes, Moore and Elmore each added one.
Elmore and Felicia Hammer led the RBI category with two each.
Game two was a first for both teams in the game. The Trojans saw their first Sun Belt loss of the season, and the Golden Panthers (17-18, 1-4) got their first conference win of the season.
The Trojans jumped out to an early lead again in game two, leading 1-0 after the first inning.
The Golden Panthers responded with two runs of their own in the second inning, and the pushed four across the plate in the fourth inning to get a 6-3 victory.
“I have to give FIU credit for coming up with some very timely hits,” Davis said.
Rain delays slowed momentum for both teams in the game, and Troy found themselves looking for a five run comeback in the seventh.
The Trojans got two of the runs needed after loading the bases, but the comeback was stalled by FIU's pitching.
“I was proud of how the team fought back and managed to get the tying run to the plate,” Davis said.
Rain made things difficult for both teams in the second contest.
Allison Moore got the start in game two. Moore struck out four batters, and allowed eight hits and six runs. Moore pitched 3.2 innings before Williams came in to relieve.
Williams posted six strikeouts and allowed two hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Gann again led the Trojans at the plate with two hits. Hillary Hughes also posted two hits in the game.
Troy and FIU will play the series deciding game three on Sunday at 1 p.m.
