Trojans Trail Early, Win Late

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After falling behind in doubles and dropping the first two singles matches, the Troy Trojans battled back to capture a 4-3 victory over Lamar in women's tennis action at the Southern Miss Spring Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Lamar jumped ahead with the doubles point, after capturing all three matches. They also went on to put Troy into a 3-0 deficit when Mariaryeni Gutierrez defeated Troy's Rawia Elsisi 6-3, 6-2; followed by a victory at number two by Maria Gutierrez over Troy's Mirte DeBakker 6-4, 6-3.
The Trojans fought back, winning the next four singles matches to capture the victory.
Leonie Guijt defeated Carla Nava of Lamar at number three singles, 6-3, 6-2 to trim the deficit to 3-1. The deficit was trimmed to 3-2 when Stephanie Vieira defeated Lamar's Manijee Ashrafi 6-4, 6-2 at number four singles. After a victory by Gabrielle Veiga over Lamar's Salina Aranda tied the match, the focus went to the number five singles.
At number five, Lamar's Manami Kuroda took a one-set lead when she captured the first set, before Caroline Jouanin came back to win the second set 6-4. The Trojans were able to capture the victory when Joaunin captured the third set when Kuroda retired (trailing 5-0 in final set).
The Trojans return to action Sunday afternoon against the host team Southern Miss, looking for their third victory this weekend.
