Trojans Drop West Virginia on Courts

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Troy University women's tennis team returned to action for the first time in 17 days, doing so without senior Annabelle Bares, and defeated West Virginia 5-2 on the opening day of the Southern Miss Invitational Friday afternoon.
Troy, which was forced to cancel their previous four matches due to an illness that affected almost 75 percent of the team, played without Bares who is out for an extended period of time with an arm injury.
The Trojans dropped the doubles point, falling at number two and number three doubles along the way. The Trojan duo of Rawia Elsisi and Leonie Guijt defeated the Mountaineers duo of Gabriela Blaskovicova and Kathryn Haught, 8-5 - the lone Troy victory in doubles action. Meanwhile, the duo of Stephanie Vieira and Caroline Jouanin fell to West Virginia's Monique Burton and Stephanie Lafortune, 8-3. And West Virginia was able to get the doubles point when the team of Mirte De Bakker and Gabrielle Veiga fell to West Virginia's Olga Elkin and Veronica Cardenas at number three.
Trailing 1-0, the Trojans needed four singles victories to claim the victory and got them in quick fashion at numbers two, four, five and six.
At number two singles, De Bakker moved into Bares slot in the lineup and defeated West Virginia's Haught 6-1, 6-1. Vieira continued the Trojan run, giving Troy a 2-0 lead when she defeated Burton 6-1, 6-4 at number four. At number five singles, Jouanin defeated West Virginia's Ashley Pilsbury 6-2, 6-3. And the Trojans clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-0 victory by Veiga at number six over West Virginia's Blaskovicova.
Troy returns to action Saturday in the Southern Miss Invitational, where they will face Lamar and Southern Miss over the final two days of the tournament.
