ONEONTA, Ala. ? Following a wet a dreary first round of play at the Samford Women's Intercollegiate Tournament on Monday, the Troy University Trojans found themselves just eight shots off the tournament lead.
With the sun out and the course drying on Tuesday, the Trojans didn't far as well, shooting a combined score of 33-over par to slip to eighth place in the final standings. The tournament was shortened to just two rounds because of the bad weather on Monday.
After shooting a 314 in the opening round, Troy was within striking distance of the tournament leading Bulldogs from Samford. However, it was Jacksonville State who set the pace in the second round, posting a team score of 292, just four-over par, to pull away from the 15-team field at Limestone Golf Club.
“We did a lot of good things in the tournament, a lot of really good things,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “We played well on Monday, despite the conditions, and put ourselves in a good position. We came out today determined to play well, didn't get off to a great start, and started to press a little bit.
“We hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, but we never seemed to be able to get our putts to fall. They played much better and they are looking forward to getting back out to practice to improve.”
JSU (599) won the tournament by 15 strokes over Samford (614) with Murray State (620), South Alabama (621) and Birmingham-Southern (623) rounding out the top five.
Individually, Troy was paced by juniors Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.) and Desirae Zine (Vaccaville, Calif.) who tied for 16th overall in the field of 79 players. Branton shot a 77 in the first round before slipping to 79 on Tuesday. Zine posted the same scores, but in reverse order. Both players finished at 12-over par for the tournament.
Katelyn Stanier of Samford took top individual honors, shooting a two-day score of two-over par 146. A trio of JSU players finished within three shots of Stanier.
For the Trojans, freshmen Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) and Nikki Crowley (Phenix City, Ala.) finished tied for 33rd and 40th, respectively. Lawrence opened with a 79 and shot an 82 on Tuesday for a 161. Crowley also opened with a 79, but slipped to 84 in the second round to finish at 163.
Senior Danielle Skipper (Cullman, Ala.) finished tied for 48th in the tournament after shooting scores of 81-83 to finish at 164.
The Trojans will return to action March 30-31 at the UALR Women's Golf Classic at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark.
