It was another day of bad weather at the Troy University Men's invitational but that didn't slow down the Troy men's golf team as they pushed ahead to claim second place while Mississippi State took home top honors.
After finishing the second round tied with Jacksonville, Troy stormed ahead and finished 12 strokes ahead of the Dolphins.
“I thought we fought hard for two days,” Golf Coach Matt Terry said. “I was real proud of finishing second. Mississippi State beat us all three rounds but we fought hard today and we ended well.”
While the weather was cold and windy, it didn't affect the play for Jay Harris and Chase Whitehead, with both players finishing in the top 4 overall.
Harris played exceptionally well turning in a score of 73, which was tied for the lowest of the day and allowed him to tie for second place.
“I'm real proud of Jay,” Terry said. “He played extremely well, finishing just two off the lead and it was nice to have a guy finish runner-up. That was something we haven't had here in awhile and we're proud of him.”
Whitehead also had a nice day for the Trojans finishing the third round with a score of 75 while playing as an individual and not for the Trojan team.
“I'm proud of Chase too,” Terry said. “It shows how big a genius I am for not putting him with the team and letting him play as an individual. I'll tell you this though. He'll be going to Tampa this week. We won't let this happen again.”
Troy ended up having a good day overall for some of their individuals, placing five guys in the top 20 overall.
Wes Parker, who finished the second round tied for fifth, fell into a tie for 16th with a score of 85 on the final round.
Reid Merritt and Jake Brodhead also made their way into the top 20 with solid and consistent performances throughout all three rounds.
While Troy fought hard to earn second place, Mississippi State cruised on the final day to earn the overall win at the Invitational. Mississippi state finished with 37 stroke lead over the Trojans.
Noah Goldman, of MSU, was the overall individual winner finishing with a score of 221 which was just 5 strokes over par on the tournament.
Brian Mason also turned in a strong performance for MSU finishing with an overall score of 223 which tied him with Jay Harris for second overall.
While Troy was surging on the final day, Jacksonville struggled and fell to fourth overall and two strokes behind third place Nebraska.
Troy won't get much of a rest after their big second place finish. They will be heading to Tampa on Wednesday for the USF Invitational.
