CHATTANOOGA - The Troy Trojans softball team grabbed two wins in their second day of the season over two opponents that made last year's NCAA tournament.
Troy (3-1) knocked off the Campbell Camels 3-2, and then after a short break the Trojans won decisively over then undefeated host UT Chattanooga Mocs (3-1)14-2.
The Trojans knocked 23 hits against the host team in the afternoon contest, and UT Chattanooga struggled to answer the Trojans offensive attack.
"The two games we played today, we knew would be very important," Trojans assistant coach Jim Webb. "Both of these teams were chosen to go to the NCAA tournament last season, and we weren't. For us to be considered we have to beat the teams that are."
The Trojans gained confidence in the morning contest against Campbell.
Tasha Elmore had two key doubles in the game, and the second one pushed in both the game tying and winning runs.
The Trojans trailed 2-0 until the fifth inning of the Campbell game, and Webb said the Trojans got confident when they got on the board.
"When we scored the first run the pressure was lifted off," Webb said. "We didn't really hit big in that game until the last three innings. We hit well enough to win that game, and we carried that feeling to the second game. We walked into the next game with big confidence."
Allison Moore started the Campbell game, but Ashlyn Williams came in and got the win.
Moore went 4.2 innings, and she gave up four hits, two runs and struck out four. Williams finished the game with four strike outs and no hits.
The Trojans started the second game of the day with Williams on the mound, and she made a statement early.
"Ashlyn struck out the side, and then we put runners out there," Webb said. "After we scored the first time it was like they (UTC) were dodging bullets the whole time."
Troy got on the board first in the second inning against the Mocs with two runs. The Trojans added five runs in the third, one in the sixth, and six in the seventh.
The Trojans had home runs from Rocky Paige and Tasha Elmore. Heidi Johnson added a triple, and Kala Moore, Nikki Hollett and Elmore added doubles in the contest.
Kala Moore was four-for-six at the plate. Elmore was four-of-five, Hollett was four-of five, and Felicia Hammer knocked her first two hits of the season going two-for-three at the plate.
Williams pitched five innings of the UTC game. She gave up three hits and no runs and struck out six. Allison Moore came in to finish the final two innings, giving up five hits, two runs and struck out one.
Webb said the team grew up a lot today as a whole.
"You don't get that unless you go through some troubles," Webb said. "Yesterday against Virginia Tech we had some troubles."
The Trojans got momentum rolling their way on Saturday, and the Trojans are looking to keep things going against Maine on Sunday morning.
The Trojans and Maine are set to battle at 10:30 a.m. eastern time, 9:30 central.
