Troy Falls to Southern Miss on Courts

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Troy Trojans returned to the courts after being rained out last Saturday, dropping a heartbreaking 4-3 non-confernece match to Southern Miss at the Hattiesburg Country Club Friday afternoon.
Troy (1-5) came back after dropping the doubles point to win three of the six singles matches that were played, coming up short in a three-setter and falling short in two other matches in straight sets.
Southern Miss (5-2) claimed the doubles point when they swept the top two spots. At number, the Golden Eagles' team of Andrew Poole and Jan Burmeister defeated Troy's team of Branko Weber and Mario Silva, 8-6, in a hard-fought match. The point was won when the number two team of Patricio Alvarado and Markus Wessinghage defeated Troy's Aurelien Tave and Xavier Masson, 8-4.
Troy avoided the sweep in doubles play when the number three team of Bastain Maucher and Benjamin Chomette continued their hot play in doubles action with an 8-3 victory over the Southern Miss team of Domagoj and Diego Machuca, 8-3.
In singles action, Southern Miss won at number one, three and four; while the Trojans won at number two, five and six on the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles won at number one when their top player, Alvarado defeated Troy's Weber in straight sets 6-2, 7-5; while Troy's number two player Tave defeated Southern Miss' Poole in straight sets, easily winning 6-1, 6-2.
At number three, the Golden Eagles' Anic defeated Troy's Chomette in a straight set battle; 7-5, 6-3; while Machuca defeated Troy's Silva in the only three-set match of the day. Silva won the first set, before Machuca was able to come back and win the final two sets to come away with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Troy won the number five and six positions when Maucher and Guilherme Sahadi winning their matches in straight sets; Sahadi winning his 7-6, 7-6 at number six.
The Trojans return to action on February 26 at home against the University of South Alabama. The match is scheduled to start 2:30 pm at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
