COLUMBIA, SC - The Troy Trojans sotfball team has already logged 1,200 plus miles of travel this season, and that total will increase this weekend as the Trojans head to the University of South Carolina.
The Trojans got their home opener under their belt, and now the time has come for them to hit the road again, and so far the travel has payed dividends as the Trojans have claimed two tournament titles in two tries. Troy is in the hunt for number three this weekend.
The Trojans are playing in the University of South Carolina Gamecock Invitational this weekend, and the Trojans have plenty of motivation to do well.
"Coming into this week we had an opportunity to face two teams getting votes in the top 25 in Auburn and South Carolina," Trojans head coach Melanie Davis said. "Unfortunately we had an extra inning loss to Auburn, and hopefully we'll get an opportunity to do a better job and come out on top against some teams considered for the top 25."
The Trojans are currently on a two-game losing streak, and the competition doesn't get easier in the trip to Columbia, South Carolina.
"UT-Chattanooga will really want to let us know that they didn't play their best game against us last time," Davis said. "We hit the ball really well against them last time. Virginia is a really tough team as well."
Davis is excited that the team's time to redeem the losses is nearing, but she also knows that any win this weekend will be a quality win.
"It's going to be a very tough tournament," Davis said. "It will be a good challenge for us, and it will give us an opportunity to continue to prepare for upcoming Sun Belt play which is just around the corner. Hopefully we can get the bats on track, and we're looking to keep our streak of tournament championships alive."
The Trojans claimed the UT Chattanooga Shootout title as well as the Georgia Southern Invitational title so far this season.
Troy gets things started on Friday morning at 9 a.m. (EST) against Virginia. The Trojans next game will follow directly afterwards against Sacred Heart. The Trojans and UT Chattanooga will re-match on Saturday at 11 a.m., and the Trojans will wrap things up against the Gamecocks of USC on Sunday at 1 p.m.
