Trojans Split With Mercer
2/14/2009 6:00:00 AM | Softball
Statesboro, GA - The Troy Trojans softball team split a pair of games with the Mercer Bears at Georgia Southern's Eagle Field.
The Trojans won the first game 6-2, but back-to-back home runs from the Bears in the second game helped Mercer get the split.
The Trojans first inning success continued in game one against Mercer. The Trojans punched in four runs in the first inning. A Nikki Hollett single started the scoring when she drove in Kala Moore. A Tasha Elmore home run pushed in Heidi Johnson, Hollet and herself to put the Trojans up 4-0.
The Trojans added a run in the second and third innings, and they held the Bears scoreless until the bottom of the seventh.
In game two, The Trojans were held scoreless in the first inning for the first time of the weekend's four games.
Sarah Stukes and Emi Sherrill of Mercer hit home runs back-to-back in the top of the second inning to put Mercer ahead for good in the game.
Troy's lone run was scored by Katie Ely in the bottom of the third, and that would be the only run production the Trojans would see in game two.
Full story and quotes from head coach Melanie Davis will be posted later this evening due to team travel.
