AVONDALE, La. ? The wind was up, the rain was falling and the conditions were ugly for Tuesday's final round of the Mardi Gras Invitational, hosted by the University of New Orleans, at the TPC of Louisiana.
Despite the harsh weather conditions, scores were down for the final round and it was the host Privateers who saved the best score for last. UNO fired a final-round 4-under par 284 to claim the tournament title after entering the final round in fifth place.
The Privateers posted an overall winning score of 883, four shots better than second round leader Southeastern Louisiana.
The Troy University Trojans also turned in their best round of the tournament, carding a team score of 299, but moved up just one spot, to 11th, in the final standings. Troy (916) finished one shot back of Kennessaw State (915) and eight back of UL Lafayette and Southern Miss (908), which tied for eighth.
Sophomore Ken Looper made it a UNO sweep, taking home individual medalist honors following a 4-under par 68 on Tuesday. He was 2-under par for the three-round event, edging St. Mary's (Calif.) Robert McCrae by one shot.
Conditions were tough at the 7,000-yard layout for the third straight round. The 78-man field dealt with rain through the mid-morning before a steady wind took over for the final holes.
“It was tough out there today,” Troy coach Matt Terry said. “Despite the conditions, our guys played much better than they did on Monday. They still left some lower scores on the course, but they made some strides.”
Freshman Rourke Van Der Spuy turned in the best round of the tournament for Troy, carding a final round of 1-over par 73, to finish tied for 30th overall in the tournament with a score of 228.
Seniors Michael McGrady and Jay Harris carded identical final round scores of 77 and finished tied for 36th overall with three-round totals of 230. Senior Wes Parker had a strong final round as well, posting a 2-over score of 74 to finish with a 234 total in a tie for 50th.
Junior Chase Whitehead finished with a 75 on Tuesday and tied for 53rd with a score of 236.
The Trojans will return to action in two weeks at the Troy University Invitational. The tournament will be played for the first time at the Heritage Ridge Golf Club in Crestview, Fla., Feb. 27-March 1.
