Troy Wins Sun Belt Opener

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Troy University women's tennis team remained perfect on the season, winning their Sun Belt Conference opener against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette 4-0 Sunday afternoon.
The match was stopped when Troy (2-0, 1-0 Sun Belt) clinched the victory with two matches remaining on the court due to the conditions of the courts. Rain moved through the area before and during the match, prompting the final two matches to be halted.
The match began at Cajun Courts but rain forced the match to be delayed at 11:20 a.m. The match resumed at 3:30 but was moved inside and was played at Red's, a local fitness center in town. Since the match was moved to Red's, as soon as Troy took a 4-0 lead the meet was called and all matches were stopped.
In singles play, Annabelle Bares opened the day, improving to 2-0 on the season with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette's Milou Israel.
When the match resumed, the Trojans continued to record singles victories when Leonie Guijt bounced back from her defeat on Friday to record a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette's Mia Gordon at number for singles.
At number five singles, Stephanie Vieira improved to 2-0 when she defeated Louisiana-Lafayette's Marin Ruiz de Gauna in three sets; 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. She was joined in the winner's circle by Carolina Jouanin at number six singles, winning over Louisiana-Lafayette's Tara Vasovic 7-6, 6-0.
The best match of the day from the score took place at number one, but was unable to be finished due to the match being clinched.
Louisiana-Lafayette led the other two matches on the court when the match was halted, with Julie Mazinova leading Troy's Rawia Elsisi at number one singles, 6-2, 2-3; while Angela Dangond led Troy's Mirte De Bakker at number three singles, 7-5, 0-1.
The Trojans return to action Friday at the University of Mississippi, before hitting the road to face Mississippi State on Saturday.
