The Troy University softball program traveled to Dothan, Ala. last week to take part in a Miracle League exhibition game.
The Miracle League is an organization that builds safe fields that give children with physical handicaps a chance to play baseball and softball.
The motto of the Miracle League is "Every Child Deserves A Chance to Play Baseball."
The Dothan Rotary Club held an exhibition game last week to kick off fundraising efforts to build a safe playground adjacent to the Miracle League field. The Dothan Miracle League Field is located at Westgate Park.
Troy softball players and coaches were given the opportunity to participate in the game as buddies. Each Miracle League player is assigned a buddy for each game. The buddy is there to protect the player from balls, assist the player in batting and running the bases, and be a friend on and off the field.
"It was a fabulous opportunity for us to give a small part of our time to an awesome group of kids," head coach Melanie Davis said. "It really makes our players realize how blessed they are to have the health and talent that they have."
"This definitely won't be the only time we'll go down there to help out," Davis said. "This was a great experience for our players and staff."
