Tournament Teaches Fundamentals

The USTA Tennis Classic of Troy took time to serve a few balls back to the
community on Wednesday afternoon.
The tournament hosted the Troy Housing Authority Children for the afternoon and taught them a few things about the game.
“It went great today,” group director Shelby Tuck said. “It's always a pleasure to let them come over and participate in this.”
The clinic featured tournament professionals along with Troy University tennis players. Lessons on how to hold the racket, how to return balls and even stretching routines were taught to the kids at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
“This is always fun,” Troy tennis coach Eric Hayes said. “I love to get out here and show these kid some things about the game, and its always pretty special to their faces light up when they learn something new.”
Pizza and Powerade rounded out the afternoon, and Tuck said its an experience the kids don't forget.
“Every year the kids always ask about coming out here, and it's something they look forward to,” Tuck said. “It gives them a chance to do something besides playing basketball all the time. This introduces them to the game too, and it's just a great experience for them.”
The USTA Tennis Classic of Troy strives each year to help give something back to the community. On Thursday some of the professionals will be traveling to Pike County High School to do a tennis clinic there as well.
“This tournament is here for the people of Troy,” Hayes said. “We love the kids here, and this is all about teaching the next generation how to play tennis and introducing them to a game they may not get a chance to play often.”
