Trojans Doubles Advance in ITA

AUBURN, Ala. - The doubles team of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt made a splash on the first day of the 2009 ITA Fall Southern Invitational Friday morning, pushing their way into the quarterfinal round.
The duo battled the elements on the opening day of the tournament, but were able to defeat the team of Shelby Dufrene and Milou Israel from conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-4 in the opening round. They then pushed their way into the round of eight with an 8-4 victory over Taylor Morgan and Lindsey Mallory in the second round (Round of 16). Next up for Grymel and Guijt is in-state foe Courtney McLane and Alexa Guarachi of Alabama on Saturday.
In other action on Friday for the Trojans, the team of Stephanie Vieira and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega advanced to the Round of 16 before they were elminated in the afternoon. They defeated the team of Plamena Kurteva and Jil Hastenrath of Auburn, 8-3, before falling to the team of Paulina Bigos and Taylor Lindsey from Alabama, 8-1.
The only other doubles team for Troy consisted of Emma Smith and Gabriella Veiga, and they fell in the Round of 32 to Mariam Kurdadze and Emma Levy of Tulane, 8-3.
In singles play, the Trojans had three of their players advance through the opening round on Friday and will play again on Saturday morning in Auburn. Karoline Grymel won her opening match of the tournament against Ebie Wilson from LSU 6-1, 6-1; while her doubles teammate Leonie Guijt won her opening round match against conference foe Shelby Dufrene from Louisiana-Lafayette 7-5, 6-2. The only other singles winner for the Trojans on Friday was Stephanie Vieira, registering a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Tulane's Hila Elster.
Grymel advances to the Round of 32 to face Auburn's Jil Hastenrath, a three-set winner in the opening round. Meanwhile, Vieria advances to face Karen Nijssen of Ole Miss in the second round; while Guijt, in the bottom half of the draw, advances to face Nicole Kantor of LSU.
