TROY ? Troy picked up another home win and two seniors stole the show as the Trojans defeated William Carey College 80-68 at Trojan Arena on Monday night.
Tom Jervis recorded just his second double-figure rebounding game of his Troy career and blocked seven shots, his second-highest career total and Josh Williams scored a career-high 14 points on a career-best four three-pointers. Jervis grabbed 10 rebounds for the game.
“I thought Tom really played well for us tonight. His presence in the middle really made a big difference for us defensively. His size really bothered them and Josh came in the game in the second half and really gave us a spark. He scored a career-high and probably hit the most three-pointers he's ever hit in one game. Plus, a lot of people don't realize how much of a spark he gave us defensively,” head coach Don Maestri said.
Troy (7-9, 2-2 SBC) got rolling early when Brandon Hazzard scored four of the Trojans' first 10 points and assisted on another helping his squad on a 10-2 run to start the game. Hazzard was one of four Trojans in double-figures and finished the game with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Travis Lee hit a three-pointer and then found the bottom of the net on a long two. On the next possession he found Richard Delk at the rim for a lay-in to open up a double-digit Trojans lead with 13:06 on the first half clock, 17-6.
Delk had a great all-around game for Troy, scoring nine points, grabbing eight rebounds and leading the team with five assists. Lee scored 11 points.
After a William Carey turnover, Williams nailed a three to give the Trojans their largest lead thus far at 17 points, 36-19.
Johnny Lockhart picked up a steal for the Crusaders with eight seconds left before the half and hit a three as time expired to give his team a 12-point deficit at halftime, 45-33.
Antywan Jones drained a pair of free throws and a jumper at the elbow to give Troy 49 points and a 12-point lead, 49-37, with 18:44 remaining in the game.
With the Trojans leading 51-40, Marcus Spann scored on a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut Troy's lead into single digits with 17:24 on the clock.
Jervis got a big block on defense, keying a Trojans break that resulted in a Delk offensive rebound and put back. Kenny Ware added a jumper and with that the Trojans took their lead back to double-digits, 62-51.
Delk and Williams hit back-to-back three-pointers, but Spann and Lockhart pulled the same feat for WCU hitting back-to-back treys of their own to cut into Troy's lead once again, 74-60 with 6:43 remaining.
Making his second consecutive start Jones scored eight points, grabbed three rebounds and added a block. Vogler scored 13 points and grabbed three rebounds.
William Carey (5-6) was led in scoring by Middleton with 18 points and eight rebounds.
