TROY, Ala. - The Troy University men's tennis team will look to rebound from a season-opening loss last weekend against 23rd-ranked Alabama at 10 am Saturday morning. It will be the second consecutive match for the men against a ranked opponent and a team from the Southeastern Conference.
Troy (0-1) fell to South Carolina 7-0 last weekend, but they did have a strong showing at number three singles and number three doubles. At number three singles, Benjamin Chomette dropped a heartbreaker in three sets, falling to South Carolina's Ivan Machado 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. In doubles play, at number three, the team of Mario Silva and Bastain Maucher fell to South Carolina's Ivan Cressoni and David Wolf, 8-6.
Although the other five singles matches went in straight sets, the Trojans battled against some of the best from the SEC. Aurelien Tave fell to South Carolina's Pedro Campos 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker), 6-3 at number two singles; setting the tone for the rest of the season for the freshman.
These same two teams met last season in Tuscaloosa when the Crimson Tide was ranked 10th in the nation, and Troy fell 7-0 to Alabama on that day. The Trojans had chances to win matches on that day, particularly at number one singles and number one doubles. Chomette lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to Alabama's Saketh Myneni at number one singles; while he and his teammate at the time, Maucher, fell to Alabama's Daniel Buikema and Mathieu Thibaudeau 8-7 (7-2) at number one doubles.
The match is the only one of the week for the Trojans, who return to action January 29 on the road against their third consecutive SEC opponent, Ole Miss.
