TROY, Ala. ? The Troy Softball team kicked off their Fall schedule with a high-octane offensive explosion against Central Alabama Community College as the Trojans scored 15 runs in a scrimmage contest.
Troy and CACC played just over two and half hours and each side got all of their pitchers work before calling it quits. Both teams also used free substitution to get work for their entire roster.
“The fall is a big part of our preparation for the new season. NCAA allows us to play a certain amount of games and these games allow us to take a look at our kids and see what we've got on the field,” head coach Melanie Davis said.
Perhaps Troy's biggest offensive play of the night came from one of its newest and smallest players, when freshman shortstop Sarah Shields turned a pitch and belted it high over the right field fence for a three-run fifth inning home run.
Shields finished the game with two hits, three RBI's and a pair of stolen bases. Tasha Elmore (4-for-5) and Hillary Hughes (two hits) also had big days at the plate.
On the whole the Trojans pounded out 19 hits on three different CACC pitchers.
“Biggest thing to me tonight was the line drive hitting from our team. The team had 19 hits against three pitchers. Most of our hits were line drive hits and that was impressive,” Davis said.
Davis was also impressed that the Trojans failed to commit an error through the entire night.
“We played perfect defense tonight without committing an error. Our defense has suffered in recent years and we want to get that back up to where it needs to be and tonight was a good step in that direction,” she said.
Ashlyn Williams got the start on the mound for the Trojans and tossed the first three innings striking out six while allowing one walk and one hit.
Allison Moore entered next completing the next four innings with five strikeouts of her own. Additionally, freshman Monique Faul tossed a scoreless final inning to end the scrimmage.
“It was exciting to see Moore and Faul come in and make a difference. Also, Ashlyn [WIlliams] started for us and did great which is what we know she can do,” Davis said.
Troy will continue its fall schedule with another contest on Saturday against LBW-Andalusia, which will also serve as Family Day. The game will start at noon. Then on Sunday Troy will face Okaloosa-Walton.
