Trojans Not Happy With Results

Troy University golf coach Matt Terry said that neither he, nor his players, were pleased with the results from the teams' first tournament of the fall season.
The Trojans played in the Palmer's Toyota Fall Intercollegiate at the Azalea City Golf Club in Mobile on Monday and Tuesday and finished 11th in the 13 team event.
“I am extremely disappointed in the way we played,” Terry said. “I don't know if the layoff after having the first tournament cancelled bothered us, but we have be able to overcome that.”
In a field that included Sun Belt Conference foes South Alabama, New Orleans and Louisiana Monroe, the Trojans dug themselves into an early hole with an opening round at six-over par 294. That left Troy 16 shots behind South Alabama.
Instead of improving over the next two rounds, the Trojans followed with scores of 298 and 297 to finish the tournament with a score of 889, 25 shots over par. South Alabama won the tournament with a score of 834, 30 strokes under par.
“This was not a very difficult course,” Terry said. “Shooting even par rounds would barely crack the top 20, and we managed just four total rounds at even par or better from our six players."
Sophomore Reid Merritt had the best performance for the Trojans, including his first-ever round under 70 with Tuesday's 69. The Slocomb, Ala., native finished the tournament at one-over par 219, tied for 25th place.
“Reid had two good rounds, but killed himself in the second round,” Terry said. “Jake Brodhead had one good round, but only managed to shoot a 71 despite having seven birdies.”
The other Troy players in the event included seniors Jay Harris (73-72-75=220) at four-over par; Michael McGrady (74-79-75=228) and Broadhead (77-71-80=228) both at 12-over par; Wes Parker (75-77-78=230) at 14-over par and freshman Rourke Van Der Spuy (76-78-78=232) at 16-over par.
“We play again in two weeks in Georgia Southern's tournament in Savannah, and we have to get better before then,” Terry said. “Georgia Southern just won another tournament by 13 shots and we have to be ready to play well."
