Troy Set To Host USTA Event

The Lunsford Tennis Center in Troy will see its annual share of pro tennis action coming up starting September 27th when it will host the USTA Tennis Classic of Troy.
The 22 automatic competitors of the 32 player field are set to play in the classic. The event features a $50,000 purse. The remaining 10 competitor slots will have to be earned through a qualify round or wild card for their shot at competing.
Some of the top names on the roster thus far are Yanina Wickmayer, Milagros Sequera, Alexandra Stevenson, Ahsha Rolle and Lauren Albanese.
Wickmayer, a native of Belgium, is currently ranked 66th in the world and is the highest ranked player entered in the tournament. The 18- year-old righthander has competed in the French and U.S. Open tournaments this year.
Sequera is a past Troy tournament champion. She is also a righthander from Venezuela, and will be looking to grab another tournament win in Troy.
Stevenson is originally from California, and made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon in her first appearance in the tournament back in 1999. She is currently ranked 206th in the world, and will look to end a slump in the this year's tournament.
Rolle is a former Troy tournament champion as well. Rolle, the righthanded Florida native, made it to the third round of the U.S. Open in 2007. Rolle and Stevenson have met on the court as opponents previously, most notably in Montreal.
Albanese is also a Florida native. She will look to spend her 19th birthday on the tennis courts of the Lunsford Tennis Center in Troy on October 1st. Albanese is a righthander that has claimed $21,406 in prize money this year.
The main draw competition begins on Tuesday, September 30th. The tournament will take place through the week with the finals set for Sunday, October 5th. This is the sixth year that Troy has hosted the Classic.
