TROY, Ala. ? After falling just one game short of a Sun Belt Conference tournament victory in 2007, coach Melanie Davis and her Troy Trojan Softball team aim to close the deal in 2008, this time serving as tournament host.
Troy, hosting the Sun Belt tournament for the first time, will meet North Texas on Wednesday at 3 pm at the Troy Softball complex in the first round of the tournament.
“You can't ask for a better situation to have our young team be able to play at home, sleep in their own beds and be cheered on by the home fans for the conference tournament,” Davis said. “The returners that faced the disappointment of falling in the championship game last season are excited for the tournament to be in Troy and a chance to avenge that loss."
Troy fell 1-0 to Florida Atlantic in the 2007 Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game.
“We just want to take it one day at a time and put forth our best effort to make a run for the championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament that comes with it,” Davis said.
The Trojans swept first-round opponent North Texas in a three-game series in Troy earlier in 2008.
