TROY, Ala. ? Troy University head football coach Larry Blakeney announced today the addition of veteran coach Randy Butler to the Trojans coaching staff.
Butler, a native of Hartford, Ala., has spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Mississippi where he is a member of the USM Athletics Hall of Fame. During his time at USM he coached tight ends for seven seasons and defensive line for 10 seasons.
Butler will take over as defensive ends coach for the Trojans and will also serve as Troy's recruiting coordinator.
“In filling this position, I was looking for an experienced guy who has coached defensive ends and who has also handled the recruiting coordinator duties,” Blakeney said. “Randy came very highly recommended from some people I have a lot of respect for, like Jeff Bower and P.W. Underwood.
“Randy is from Hartford as we have all known him over the years in the recruiting circles for the outstanding work he did at Southern Miss. This was a no-brainer as far as I was concerned.”
In addition to his time coaching at Southern Miss, where he also played, Butler also coached at Southern Methodist, Tulane, the University of the South, Mississippi Delta Community College and Navarro Junior College. He spent the last seven seasons as assistant head coach at Southern Miss.
“I am excited to get back close to home because I have family in Hartford,” Butler said. “I am also excited to get back to a place where you have a chance to win a championship every year. I have always heard a lot of good things about Coach Blakeney and this program has always been very good under him.
“There are a lot of good things to sell at this University. It is a great place to get an education and it is a great place to play college football. I am looking forward to getting started.”
Butler will be joining Blakeney and Trojans basketball coach Don Maestri in the 2008 Hall of Fame class being inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame.
Butler is married to the former Angela Smith and the couple has two children, Anna Leigh and Chelsea.
