MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. ? A
disappointing week of play in the Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship came to
an end for the Troy women's golf team on
Wednesday with a final round score of 323.
The Trojans finished in last place in the 11-team event at
“The Schoolmaster” course at the Robert Trent Jones Shoals facility.
“We have got to get better, as a team, this off season,” Troy coach Matt Terry said. “I am certainly not happy
with the way the team played, and I hope they are not satisfied. They have got
to work hard this summer to improve their level of play because we can not play
the way we have been and expect to compete in this league.”
The Trojans finished 98 shots back of five-time league
champion Denver,
which posted an eight-over par team score of 872 for the week to win the league
title by 42 shots over second place Arkansas-Little Rock.
The Pioneers' Stephanie Sherlock, a sophomore from Barrie, Ontario,
took home top individual honors in the tournament with an eight-under par score
of 208. She won the individual title by 10 shots over Paula Hurtado, a freshman
from FIU.
Sophomore Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.)
was the top finisher for the Trojans. She shot a final round 77 to finish the
tournament at 19-over par 235, tied for 26th.
Sophomore Desirae Zine (Vacaville, Cal.)
finished tied for 39th after carding an 81 on Wednesday to finish at
24-over par 240 for the tournament.
Freshman Liz Balkcom (Juliette,
Ga.) carded her third straight 82
on Wednesday to finish in 46th place at 30-over par.
Junior Danielle Skipper (Cullman,
Ala.) finished tied for 47th after
posting an 84 Wednesday and freshman Annellies Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand)
finished 53rd after her final round score of 83.
“We have a young team and we have signed a player from Prattville, Haley
Lawrence, who should be able to come in and help us right away,” Terry said. “I
am going to sign one more player to give us a deeper team next year. We need
the depth to be more competitive in practice on a daily basis so that we will
be more competitive when we are playing.”
