? Despite making an eight-shot improvement over their opening round, the Troy
University women's golf team slipped into last place at the Sun Belt Conference
Golf Championship Tuesday at “The Schoolmaster” Course.
Troy followed an opening
round 327 with a 319 on Tuesday, but was unable to keep pace with their playing
partners from Western Kentucky. The
Hilltoppers, who posted a 328 on Monday, rebounded with a 303, the second best
round of the day, on Tuesday to move up two spots into ninth place.
Nationally-ranked Denver
continues to lead the field by a wide margin despite posting an eight-over par
score of 286. The Pioneers (584) lead second place South
Alabama (610) by a commanding 26 shots. Middle Tennessee (613) and Arkansas-Little Rock
(614) stand third and fourth, respectively.
Individually, sophomore Desirae Zine (Vacaville,
Cal.) had the best round of the day for Troy, posting a six-over
score of 78.
Sophomore Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.)
shot an 80 on Tuesday and stands at 14-over par (158) for the tournament, tied
for 30th place. Zine is one shot back, tied for 36th.
Junior Danielle Skipper (Cullman, Ala.)
made the biggest strides on Tuesday, improving by seven shots with a 79 to move
into a tie for 45th at 165. Freshman Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.)
shot a second straight 82 and stands tied for 43rd at 164.
Freshman Annelies Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand)
continued to struggle, shooting a 92 on Tuesday. She is in 53rd
place in the tournament.
The tournament leader is Denver
sophomore Stephanie Sherlock (Barrie,
Ontario). After posting a
one-over 73 on Tuesday, she is the only player under par in the field, leading
by one shot over freshman Christina Marin (Zaragoza, Spain)
of Florida International.
Five other players are within five shots of the lead
entering the final round of the tournament.
The Trojans will open play in the final round on the back
nine, playing with Louisiana-Monroe, starting at 7:38 a.m. on Wednesday.
