TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women's team opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 7-0 shutout of Arkansas State, running their record to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in Sun Belt play.
The Trojans broke away early in the match, sweeping the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Annabelle Bares and Rawia El Sisi defeated the Lady Indians team of Renee Branker and Emily Laing, 8-3, at number one doubles; while the team of Mirte De Bakker and Leonie Guijt defeated the ASU team of Maria Oprea and Paula Chelminska 8-4 at number two doubles to clinch the points. The Trojans' team of Carolina Jounia and Stephanie Vieria defeated ASU's Rone Van Wyk and Leydi Zora 8-2 at number three doubles to complete the sweep.
In singles play, the Trojans dropped only two sets the entire afternoon - at number three and number five.
At number three, De Bakker won the opening set before dropping the second set. However, she breezed through the third set to claim a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Van Wyke. Jounia was the only other Trojan to drop a set, dropping the second set in her 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) victory.
In other singles action, El Sisi picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number one singles; Bares a 6-3, 6-2 victory at number two; Vieria a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number four and Guijt a 6-4, 7-5 victory at number six.
The victory was clinched by Guijt at number six.
