MOBILE, Ala. ? The Troy University women's golf team struggled to a tie for 16th place finish at the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational completed Tuesday at the Azalea City Golf Course.
All 18 teams in the tournament were forced to battle harsh weather conditions, including very high winds, during the two-day event. The Trojans finished tied with Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas State with a two-round score of 73 over par.
“The wind really played havoc on everyone, but we didn't help ourselves by not chipping and putting well around the greens,” Troy coach Matt Terry said. “We played a little better the second day. We still have plenty of work to do.”
East Tennessee State took home top honors in the tournament, shooting a total score of 24-over par 600. Southern Miss finished second 17 shots back at plus 41 with McNeese State (+51), Belmont (+53) and Lamar (+55) rounding out the top five.
Host South Alabama had the best finish among five Sun Belt teams, earning a tie with Jacksonville State for seventh with a score of 57 over par. MTSU finished in a tie for ninth (+58) and Louisiana-Monroe (+65) tied for 13th.
Top individual honors went to Sinead O'Sullivan of East Tennessee, who was the only player in the tournament to finish under par. Her second round 69 gave her a total score of 0ne-under 143 for the event. Virginia Espejo of Southern Miss finished second, three shots back.
Freshman Annelies Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand) led the Trojans, finishing in a tie for 12th at 10 over par. Junior Danielle Skipper (Cullman, Ala.) was the next best Trojan, finishing in a tie for 60th place with a score of 20-over par.
The rest of the Troy squad included sophomore Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.), who finished in a tie for 68th at 21-over par; sophomore Desirae Zine (Vaccaville, Calif.), who finished tied for 84th at 26-over par; and freshman Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.), who finished 94th at 29-over par.
The Troy women will return to action March 12-15 at the Gainesville Shootout in Gainesville, Fla.
