Trojans Ease Past NMSU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Troy University women's tennis team eased past New Mexico State 5-2 in their opening match of the Southern Miss Spring Classic at the Racquet Club of Hattiesburg Friday afternoon.
The Trojans picked up a hard fought doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the overall match. After dropping the number three doubles 8-5, the Trojans earned two 9-8 victories at the top two positions to capture the point. The number one team of Annabelle Bares and Rawia El Sisi defated NMSU's Aleksa Costa and Sophia Marks; before the number two team of Mirte De Bakker and Leonie Guijt defeated NMSU's Zeljka Juricek and Stehanie Eusebe to earn the point.
The Trojans captured four of the six points in singles, losing only at number three and number five. At number one singles, Bares defeated NMSU's Juricek in straight sets 6-1, 6-0; followed by a victory by Stephanie Vieria over NMSU's Anne Fagegltier 6-3, 6-2. El Sisi and Jounia had the toughest matches that were won by the Trojans on the day. El Sisi won at number one over NMSU's Marks 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6); while Carolina Jounia claimed a victory at number six to wrap up the match over NMSU's Paulina Zuniga 7-6, 6-1.
The Trojans return to action on Saturday afternoon against the host team, the University of Southern Mississippi at 1 pm.
