SPRINGFIELD, La. - The Troy University men's golf team made major improvements during Tuesday's final round at the Carter Plantation Invitational hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University.
The Trojans improved by 19 shots over their second round effort, shooting a team score of 305 in the final round at the par-72, 7,049-yard course. The strong final round, which was sixth best on the day among the 15 teams, moved Troy up to 13th place, one shot behind Rice and Louisiana Tech in 11th and two behind Texas-San Antonio in 10th.
“We played better today,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “I was real frustrated yesterday because the course was very tough and we didn't play well. It was a course where if you didn't hit the ball right where you wanted, you would make double (bogey) quick.
“I am disappointed with where we are as a team at this point. I know that we can play better and we will play better this week at Middle.”
Sun Belt Conference foe Middle Tennessee led the field, shooting a total score of 881, 15-over par, for the event. The Blue Raiders were led by tournament medalist Rick Cochran, who shot a final round score of 70 to win by three shots over Keegan Bradley of St. John's.
Marquette finished a distant second behind MTSU with a score of 907, followed by UL Lafayette (910) in third, Jacksonville State (916) in fourth and the host SLU club, tied with UL Monroe (920) in fifth.
The Trojans were led by junior Michael McGrady (Harare, Zimbabwe), who bounced back from a tough two rounds on Monday with an even-par 72 in the final round. McGrady finished with a 17-over par total score of 233 in a tie for 26th place overall.
“When Michael shoots 79-82, I knew we were in trouble,” Terry said. “This tournament will really hurt him in the national standings, but he still has a chance to make it to the NCAA. It is all right in front of him and he knows what he has to do.”
Junior Jake Broadhead (Warsaw, Ind.) finished two shots behind McGrady in a tie for 32nd place while senior Jordy Hayden (Livingston, Ala.) finished two shots further back at 237, in a tie for 39th.
Junior Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.) finished tied for 58th at 241 and junior Jay Harris (Killen, Ala.) finished 77th with a score of 255.
The Trojans will return to action this weekend at the MTSU Aldila Intercollegiate at the Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro. Play starts on Sunday, March 30, with a practice round. The tournament will include 36 holes of play on Monday followed by a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday, April 1.
