The Troy University women's golf team opens its 2008 spring season on Saturday at the Koasati Pine Collegiate Classic at the Koasati Pines Resort in Kinder, La., near Lake Charles.
The Trojans will be part of a field of 16 schools, including defending tournament champion South Alabama, in the 54-hole event.
“It is a big field this weekend, with 16 teams,” Troy golf coach Matt Terry said. “It is a great golf course, we enjoyed it last year, and we are looking forward to getting started.”
The course, a 7,617 yards monster from the championship tees, is a Kevin Tucker design and has been rated as the fourth best golf course in the state of Louisiana by Golf Digest. The competing teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and and 18-hole file round on Sunday.
“Our team has been practicing very hard,” Terry said. “Our big question is whether Desirae Zine is healthy enough to go.
“Hopefully, we can show this weekend how much we have improved since the fall. The big thing with the ladies is you can't always tell how good you are going to be until you play. They just seem to play better when they are in a tournament.”
Zine, a sophomore from Vaccaville, Calif., was the Trojans' top player in the fall, but has been struggling with a stomach virus of late. If she is not able to play, then one of the other players on the squad will have to pick up the slack.
Juniors Danielle Skipper (Cullman, Ala.) and SarahWeldon (Madison, Ala.) are the veterans on the team. Kaley Branton, a sophomore from Cartersville, Ga., and a trio of freshmen ? Annelies Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand), Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) and Brittany Bassett (Auburn, Ala.) ? round out the squad.
“They really don't know how good they can be,” Terry said. “We've got a couple of girls that hit is further than others, and that gives them an advantage.”
South Alabama will once again be the team to beat in this tournament. The Jaguars won five times last year, including a one-stroke victory over Lamar at Koasati Pines.
Other teams in the field this year are: host McNeese State, Louisiana-Monroe, Wichita State, FIU, Nicholls State, Texas-San Antonio, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston State, Central Arkansas, Lamar, Arkansas State, Centenary, Houston Baptist and McClennan Junior College.
