GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? The Troy University Trojans dropped to 1-4 this season, falling to fifth-ranked Florida 7-0 in women's non-conference tennis action Thursday afternoon.
Florida (3-0) won the doubles point by sweeping the Trojans in all three matches. The Trojans dropped the first doubles match of the day at number three with the team of Stephanie Vieria and Caroline Jounia falling to Florida's Julia Cohen and Csilla Borsanyi 8-0 in a 29-minute match.
The number two team of Mirte de Bakker and Leonie Guijt fell to Florida's Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan 8-2 to clinch the point for the Gators. Troy's number one doubles team of Annabelle Bares and Rawia El Sisi fell to Florida's Megan Alexander and Marritt Boonstra 8-2 in 38 minutes to finish off the doubles segment of the match.
The Trojans battled in two of the matches, sending them to three sets, while they also extended two other matches to long two-setters.
Singles' play started with Florida winning at number and number six 6-0, 6-0; before Anastasia Revzina defeated Troy's Vieria at number four singles 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the victory for Florida.
The final three matches of the day saw Bares fall to Borsanyi 6-2, 6-3 at number one; De Bakker fall to Alexander 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 at number three; while El Sisi fell 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in a two hour marathon at number three.
“I am proud of our effort today,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. “Florida is one of the best programs in the nation, and our girls played hard from start to finish. They played the entire match, never giving up, against a team that never loses at home.”
With the victory, Florida has now won 59 consecutive regular season home matches, the second-longest streak in program history and has won 45 in a row at home that includes all matches.
The Trojans return to action Saturday afternoon against the University of North Florida. The match begins at 12 noon in Troy.
