Trojans Power Through Day Two

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? The Troy Trojan softball team used six home runs on Saturday to improve to 4-0 at Samford's Bulldog Bash with wins over Louisville and Samford.

Troy (6-3) hit two home runs against Louisville and four against Samford to help the Trojans reach Sunday's championship game.

Heidi Johnson's two-run walk-off home run gave Troy a 4-3 win over Louisville on day two of the Samford Bulldog Bash at Bulldog Field. The Trojans defeated Samford 7-5 in the afternoon session.

The home run was Johnson's second of the day and it drove in Courtney Davis to give Troy the one-run victory. She hit her first home run of the season in the seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings.

Louisville scored in the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Trojans were able to answer back when Hillary Hughes drove in Kala Moore who had been placed on second base because of the international tie-breaker rule.

The Cardinals (4-3) again broke the tie in the top of the ninth before Johnson's home run sealed the Trojan victory.

Johnson and Hughes were the only Trojans with multiple hits. Moore also recorded a hit for Troy.

Louisville scored their only run of regulation in the third inning when Kassie Stanfill took Troy starting pitcher Ashlyn Williams deep to leftfield.

Williams tossed a complete game for Troy, her fifth. She allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two and walking one.

UL relief pitcher Kristen Wadwell (5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) was saddled with the loss, dropping her to 2-2 on the season.

Stanfill allowed only one hit in three innings after getting the start. She struck out seven Trojans.

In Troy's second game of the day they squared off with Samford for the third time in five days.

Troy started slowly as starting pitcher Cassie Lassiter surrendered two runs in both the first and second innings before being relieved by Williams.

Williams (6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K; now 6-1) picked up her fourth victory of the tournament and second of the day.

One swing of Lassiter's bat got two runs back for Troy. She belted a Margaret Carter pitch deep to left centerfield to score herself and Davis cutting the Bulldog lead to 4-2.

Davis kept the offense going for Troy in the fourth inning when she crushed her first home run of the season over the right field fence to cut the Samford advantage to 4-3.

A two-out rally in the fifth inning put the Trojans on top for good when Hughes doubled in Moore to tie the game at four runs apiece.

Next, Johnson added her third home run of the day, this time to left field. Her shot off the scoreboard also scored Hughes to give Troy a 6-4 lead.

Katie Taber added an insurance run in the sixth inning with her first home run of the year, a towering blast over the Samford scoreboard behind the leftfield fence.

The Bulldogs added a late run in the seventh inning with Jessica Owens scoring on a sacrifice fly.

Johnson finished Troy's second Saturday game 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Davis (2-for-2) scored two runs to go along with her homer.

The victory over Samford places Troy in the Championship Game of the Bulldog Bash on Sunday at 1:15 PM against Louisville.
