Trojans Score Early, Hold On to Defeat Samford

“I'm proud of how we came out today. We came out ready to play,” coach Melanie Davis said. “Jessica Lyle provided strong senior leadership and had several big hits.”
Ashlyn Williams (7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K; now 1-1) had her second straight quality start, throwing her third complete game in three starts.
“Ashlyn showed that she was a winner tonight, she didn't have her best stuff but she battled and was able to get the win,”
Hughes went on to score two batters later on a Lyle RBI double after being moved over to second base on a Heidi Johnson sacrifice bunt. The Trojans added two more runs in the third inning on another run scoring double by Lyle. This time she would drive in pinch runner Anna Tew and Johnson to give
Samford picked up a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth but were unable to get the tying run across the plate.
A major turning point came in the top of the second inning when
The Bulldogs had stolen 10-of-12 bases in their first four games. After Hammer nailed Deaux in the second inning, the Bulldogs did not attempt another stolen base.
“Felicia Hammer gunned down the first player that tried to steal for them and they didn't try to steal again,”
“That shut down a big part of their game.”
