Troy University golf coach Matt Terry announced today the signing of two players who will join the men's program in the fall of 2009.
The pair is Kyle Blackston from Elizabethtown, Ky., and Cameron Munro is from Pennington, Natal, South Africa. Both will enroll as freshmen in the fall of 2009.
“We are extremely excited to have both of these young men join the Troy golf family,” Terry said. “They both have the potential to be outstanding players in our program and in the Sun Belt Conference.”
Blackston, 18, is currently a senior at John Hardin High School in Elizabethtown. He has been a varsity letter winning player for his high school team for six years and has participated in four state tournament events.
Since his sophomore year, Blackston has led the Bulldog golf team to one Region Team title and two Region Runner up finishes. He has been chosen as an All Area Player for four years, and was named Sophomore of the Year. He also earned KHSAA All-State academic honors every year in high school.
“Kyle is a player with enough talent to develop into a very good college player,” Terry said. “He will have a very good chance to see playing time immediately when he comes to campus. If he has a great spring and summer, he should make a huge impact on our program.”
This past year Blackston was active in junior golf on the AJGT, SJGT and AAJGT tours, winning the AAJGT Sports Medicine Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., and the SJGT University of Florida Classic in Gainesville, Fla.
Munro served as the captain of KZN U19 team this year and was the Southern Natal Champion in 2007. His other golf highlights have included a second at the Natal Juniors Stroke play in 2008, a fourth at the South African Juniors in 2008, a tie for third at the Natal Juniors match play in 2008 and a second at the Natal Juniors Stroke play in 2007.
He was the Southern Natal Schools champion in 2007 and the Scottburgh High School Champion in both 2006 and 2007.
“Cameron is a player with great leadership skills, as evidence by his selection to be the captain of the KZN Team,” Terry said. “He will have a very good chance to see playing time immediately when he comes to campus. He is very talented and if he continues to develop over the next few months should have a chance to come in and make our team a lot better.”
