Trojans Fall to LSU, 92-57
11/30/2008 6:00:00 AM | Basketball (M)
BATON ROUGE, La.- The LSU Tigers opened up a 10-0 early lead and never looked back en route to a 92-57 win over the Trojans Sunday night at the Maravich Assembly Center.
"We tried to do something offensively tonight that we haven't practiced much this year," head coach Don Maestri said. "We spread the ball around and I think it took us out of our offensive mind-set compared to what we normally do."
The Tigers got off to a hot start by connecting on their first four shots as they run out to an 13-0 lead paced by Garret Temple and Marcus Thornton.
The Trojans hit their first shot after missing the previous five when Brandon Hazzard hit a jumper from the right corner at the 16:34 mark to get Troy on the board at 13-2.
"We shot poorly tonight because we didn't execute our game," Maestri said. "We never really got in to a rhythm tonight and that is partially my fault. We made a lot of bad decisions in the first half in the way that we shot the ball. We got behind early and had to play catch up the rest of the way."
LSU blocked three of Troy's first eight shots while out-rebounding the Trojans 9-1 in the opening minutes of the game.
"LSU is a very good team and they have a great defensive coach," Maestri said. "His team does exactly what he tells them to do and it shows when they play."
Marcus Thornton paced the first half attack for the Tigers with 12 points to lead all scorers.
The Trojans shot 35 percent from the floor in the first half while LSU shot 43 percent. Troy hit on just 4-of-12 shooting from behind the arc compared to the Tigers' 5-of-13 for the 41-27 first half lead.
The Trojans came out in the second half as they did in the first half and could not get caught up and struggled to get rolling offensively.
The Trojans made five trips down the floor in the second half and turned the ball over three times with missed two shots. LSU took advantage of those missed opportunities and turned those miscues into 10 points. A pair of late three pointers from Thornton and several dunks ultimately put the game out of reach for Troy late in the second half.
The Tigers outscored Troy 38-12 in the paint and also had 38 second chance points. In the game, the Trojans shot 34 percent from the field on 21-of-61 shooting including connecting on 8-of-24 from behind the arc.
Thornton finished the contest with a game-high 32 points by hitting 13 of his 24 shots. LSU had three players in double figures. Chris Johnson finished with 12 and Bo Spencer had 13.
Hazzard led Troy with 16 point on 5-of-10 shooting. He was the only player in double-figures for the Trojans. Chris Leggett added nine points and three blocked shots.
The Trojans will be back in action Tuesday night when they travel to Dayton, Ohio to face the Flyers. Tip-off is set for 6:30 pm.
