11/20/2008 6:00:00 AM | Basketball (M)
BATON ROUGE, La. ? With 1:50 to go the game was locked up 75-75, but the Gents went on a 6-2 run in the final minute to defeat the Trojans 81-77 in men's basketball action at the Maravich Assembly Center.
The Gents (1-2) tied the game at 75 on a Jerrald Bonham hook shot in the lane with 1:50 remaining in the game and Nick Stallings knocked down two free throws with 67 seconds on the clock to give Centenary just their second lead of the game at 77-75.
Stallings finished the game with 31 points along with seven rebounds and five assists
Gary Redus went to the line with 21.2 seconds remaining and knocked down two free throws to cap a 6-0 run with less than a minute on the clock.
Troy (0-3) had the ball after the free throws but missed a three and two subsequent put backs before Brandon Hazzard hit a jumper to cut the lead to 79-77.
Next, Chase Adams went to the line following a Michael Vogler foul with 3.8 second on the clock and hit both to ice the game 81-77.
“I thought [Centenary] played really well. There were times where we did have the lead and we made mistakes under the goal. They made the big free throws when they needed them. Down the stretch we just have to make plays,” head coach Don Maestri said.
The game featured six ties and nine lead changes. The loss moved the Trojans to 0-3 on the young season and was the first of the season for Centenary.
Richard Delk hit a runner and a three-pointer to open up a five point lead for the Trojans just one minute into the game.
Tom Jervis picked up the next eight points for Troy on two dunks and a put-back lay up off his own miss. His efforts pushed the Troy lead out to 13-9 for Troy.
After Travis Lee's first three-pointer of the game, Mario Telfair grabbed a rebound and fed Vogler, who in turn found Antywan Jones cutting to the basket for an easy lay-in that stretched the Trojans' lead to 23-16 with 11:21 on the clock.
Regis Huddleston scored his first points of the afternoon with a long two-pointer around the seven minute mark, but Nick Stallings came right back for the Gentlemen with a three-pointer from the corner to cut Troy's lead to 33-24.
Redus connected on a long three-pointer and Stallings picked up a lay-up to cut Troy's lead to one, but Delk picked up two more to push the lead to three.
Just a few moments later Damon Starring hit a three to tie the game at 40 with 1:24 to go in the first half. Troy's Vogler hit one of two free throws on the Trojans' next possession to give them a one point lead, 41-40.
Troy got two from Jervis and two more on a long jumper from Kenny Ware, but Centenary refused to go away as they traded buckets leaving the game tied with 15:46 remaining.
The bucket by Jervis tied his career-high of 14 he set against Paul Quinn College last season. He finished with 18 points and five rebounds.
The Gents took their first lead of the game on a free throw by Stallings with 15:45 on the clock, but Troy came right back gaining the lead on a banked in jumper from the free throw line by Huddleston.
The teams traded the lead back and forth with Delk scoring, then the Trojans ceded the lead on a Redus jumper before Telfair hit one-of-two free throws to tie the game at 50 with 14:02 remaining.
With the Trojans trailing by one, Huddleston completed a four-point play to push Troy back on top and after a Hazzard lay-up the lead was 58-53 with 11:19 to go in regulation.
Delk drained two free throws with less than nine minutes on the clock to push Troy's lead to 67-61. Delk finished with a career-high 23 points, the second game in a row he has set a new career-high total. He also grabbed four rebounds.
With five minutes on the clock Troy led by four 73-69, but Daman Starring knocked down two free throws to cut the lead down to two.
Vogler then found Jervis with a behind the back pass for an easy lay up that moved the Troy lead to 75-71.
Vogler made his first start of the season after missing the first two games of the season with an ankle injury. He scored just one point, but finished with 10 assists in 31 minutes.
“I think we were running the ball well. With Vogler if you're open he will find you,” Maestri said.
The Trojans will have little time to rebound when they return to action at 1:30 PM tomorrow when they face Alcorn State.
“I'm glad we can play again right off the bat tomorrow. We need a win and hopefully we can get one soon. We need a win just like Centenary needed a win today,” Maestri said.
