HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Troy University men's golf team turned in its best round of the fall season on Tuesday in the final round of the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
The Trojans shot a 293 on Tuesday, which was the fifth best team score of the day and bettered their best round Monday by six shots. Despite the improvement, the Trojans did not move up the leader board, and finished in a tie with Longwood University for eighth in the 14-team field.
Sun Belt Conference schools finished first, second and third in the tournament, with New Orleans (868) holding off Middle Tennessee (872) and Arkansas State (881) for the tournament title. Austin Peay State was the biggest mover on Tuesday, shooting a tournament low round of 284 to move from ninth into a tie with Illinois State for fourth.

Troy senior Michael McGrady (Harare, Zimbabwe) closed the tournament with a one-over score of 72 to move into a tie with teammate Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.) at 12-over 225 for the tournament.
The Trojans' three other players ? freshman Rourke van der Spuy (Bluff, KwaZuluNatal, South Africa) and sophomores Reid Merritt (Slocomb, Ala.) and Zach Portemont (Andalusia, Ala.) ? all finished in a tie for 37th place, one shot back of their teammates at 13-over 226.
Portemont had the best round of the day for Troy, closing with an even-par score of 71. Van der Spuy closed with a 74, while Parker carded a 76 and Merritt a 78.
The Trojans will close their fall schedule next week at the Rees Jones Invitational at The Haig Point Club in Daufuskie Island, SC, just off the coast from Savannah, Ga. The event, which is hosted by Michigan State University, was rescheduled from early September because of the threat from a tropical storm.
