Trojans Stand Eighth After Opening Rounds

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Troy University men's golf team finds itself 18 shots off the lead at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate after the first two rounds at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
The Trojans sit in eighth place in the 14-team event, after shooting rounds of 300 and 299 to post a 31-over par score of 599 on Monday. Fellow Sun Belt Conference school New Orleans leads the event after shooting rounds of 296-285 for a 13-over total of 581.
The final round of the tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, with play set to start at 8 a.m.
New Orleans owns a five stroke lead over Middle Tennessee and Jacksonville State, which both shot 18-over par scores of 586 on Monday. Host Southern Miss sits in fourth place, seven off the lead, after posting a 20-over par score of 588.
Individually, sophomore Reid Merritt (Slocomb, Ala.) leads the Trojans. After an opening round of 72, Merritt shot a 76 in the second round for a combined score of 148. His six-over par score stands six shots back of tournament leader Hunter Hawkins of Jacksonville State, who followed an opening round 73 with a two-under score of 69 in the second round.
Senior Wes Parker (Enterprise, Ala.) is one shot back of Merritt, tied for 27th, after shooting scores of 77-72, for a seven-over total of 149.
Freshman Rourke Van Der Spuy (Bluff, KwaZuluNatal, South Africa) is tied for 48th (76-76=152), senior Michael McGrady (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 52nd (78-75=153) and sophomore Zachary Portemont (Andalusia, Ala.) is tied for 61st (75-80=155).
Behind Southern Miss in the race for the team title are Illinois State (590), Arkansas State (594), Longwood (597), Troy (599), Austin Peay (600), Murray State (601), Jacksonville (602), Texas-Pan American (603), Winthrop (604) and Rhode Island (607).
