Troy Women Return to Action

The Troy University women's golf team will return to action this weekend at the LDR Investments/Lady Colonel Collegiate, hosted by Nicholls State University.
The tournament will be played this year at The Bridges, an Arnold Palmer designed course in Bay St. Louis, Miss., on the Hollywood Casino property.
“They moved the tournament to Bay St. Louis after Hurricane Gustav caused significant damage on the course in Houma where the tournament is usually played,” Trojans coach Matt Terry said. “Ironically, this will be one of the first events played at The Bridges since Hurricane Katrina wiped out the Mississippi coast.”
The Trojans are coming off a 12th place finish last week at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational in Bradenton, Fla. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes by rain after Troy got off to a good start with an opening round score of 304.
The teams played most of the second round in the rain before play was suspended and completed the next morning. The Trojans slipped to a score of 315 in the second round, finishing one shot behind Akron and six back of Kennesaw State.
Sophomore Liz Balkcom (Juliette, Ga.) turned in one of her best performances in her two seasons with back-to-back scores of 76, to finish at eight-over par in a tie for 30th.
“Liz is playing well and is coming off her lowest 36-hole score since she has been here,” Terry said. “She really seems to be figuring her game out and I expect her to continue to improve.”
Freshman Haley Lawrence (Prattville, Ala.) also had a strong performance, finishing tied for 33rd with a nine-over par score of 153. Junior Kaley Branton (Cartersville, Ga.) and freshman Nikki Crowley (Phenix City, Ala.) tied for 38th place in the event at 13-over par.
“I expect Kaley to have a good showing this week,” Terry said. “I played with her yesterday in a practice round and she was hitting the ball very well.”
Sophomore Annelies Bunnik-Anderson (Ohaupo, New Zealand) will round out the Trojans squad for the event in Bay St. Louis.
“Annelies really looks like she is ready to turn the corner and play well this week,” Terry said. “She has been playing with much more confidence.
“The entire team has continued to improve its efficiency around the greens, and that is the key to scoring well. We only had six three putts for the entire team last week over 10 total rounds, which is outstanding.”
The Trojans will be joined in Bay St. Louis by the host team from Nicholls State, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Centenary, Sam Houston State, Lamar, McNeese State, Samford and Jacksonville State. The team will play a practice round on Sunday afternoon before tournament play opens on Monday morning.
