Strong Showing By Tennis At UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Troy Trojans capture a pair of championships at UNF Fall Invitational this weekend, opening their fall season. Although the Trojans had four different players reach the finals (all playing against each other) and one doubles team, they made the trip back to Troy before the matches were played due to travel and weather. The tournament was hampered by rain throughout with matches moved throughout the weekend to accomodate travel.
In the Women's B Singles, Mirte De Bakker and Stephanie Vieira reached the finals, but reaching them a different way. De Bakker received a bye in the opening round, then defeated Andrea Paez of Bethune-Cookman 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Melanie Rolle of Georgia Southern 6-3, 6-2; before facing and defeating Maria Pazo of Florida International in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 in the semfinals.
Meanwhile, Vieria received a bye in the opening round before defeating Andrea Herrera of Middle Tennessee in three sets 7-5, 1-6, 10-6 in the second round. In the quarterfinal round, Vieria defeated Aniko Kiss of South Carolina State 7-6, 6-3; and then defeating Karina Kedzo of East Tennessee State 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals to move on to face De Bakker for the championship.
In the women' Flight C Championship. Leonie Giujt and Caroline Jouanin reached the finals against each other. Guijt defeated Bethune-Cookman's Chanetra Brown 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round; then dispatched of Georgia Southern's Shea Huxtable 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Guijt defeated North Florida's Nikita Van Lierop 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 on her homecourt; then defeated Samford's Stephanie Parkison 6-1, 6-2 to reach the finals. Prior to her match with Guijt, Parkison had not dropped a set throughout the tournament.
Meanwhile, Jouanin defeated East Tennessee's Vita Moskaliova 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round; then dispatched of Bethune-Cookman's Jeneice Ward 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 16. Jouanin then defeated Middle Tennessee's Marlene Chemin 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals; before defeating Jacksonville's Fernanda Carrero 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 to reach the finals.
In other singles action for the Trojans, Annabelle Bares entered the tournament as the second seed in Flight A and made it to the semfinals before falling to UAB's Evelin Strijker 6-4, 6-4. Bares won her second round match over Florida International's Priscilla Castillo 6-0, 6-4; before defeating South Carolina State's Daria Sekerina 6-2, 2-6, 3-2 (retired due to injury) in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Rawia Elsisi entered the Flight A Championship as the fourth seed and reached the semifinals before falling top-seeded Liset Brito of Florida International 6-1, 6-4. In her second round match, Elsisi defeated Florida International's Maria Vallasciani 6-2, 1-6, 10-5; before defeating East Tennessee State's Tara Byrne 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
The Trojans also reached the finals in the Women's Flight B Championship with the team of De Bakker and Vieria. The duo, after receiving a first round bye, defeated North Florida's Lauren Holton and Van Lierop 8-4 in the quarterfinal round. They reached the championship by defeating Jacksonville's Fernanda Carrero and Juliana Umeki, 8-5. The team that the Trojans were to face in the championship Sunday afternoon was Florida International's Maria Spencely and Maria Vallasciani who won their two matches 8-3 and 8-5 to reach the championship.
The team of Guijt and Gabriella Viega also reached the finals of the Flight C Championship with two easy victories. In the quarterfinal round, the duo defeated South Carolina State's Fanni Friska and Tatiana Varela, 8-4. They then defeated Stetson's Jacqueline Faulk and Daniella Palmiotto 8-2 in the semifinals. However, in the finals, the duo fell to a combined team of Andrea Herrera (Middle Tennessee) and Paula Jaime (East Tennessee State), when they withdrew due to illness.
In other doubles action on the women's side, the team of Bares and Elsisi reached the semifinals with an 8-4 victory over Samford's Lindsey Mallory and Taylor Morgan. They fell in the semifinals to Florida International's Maria Pazo and Alyona Tsutskova, 8-3.
The men did not fair as well as the women did in singles as Bastain Maucher dropped both his matches in the Flight A Championship, both in the main draw and in the consolation draw.
Meanwhile, in Flight B, Guilherme Sahadi reached the championship match after having to win four matches to do so. Sahadi defeated Jacksonville's Matthew Rock 6-2, 7-5 in the opening round; then defeated Georgia Southern's Matthew Sands6-1, 7-5 in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinal round, Sahadi defeated South Carolina State's Tomas Dobrotka 3-6, 6-3, 10-7; then defeated Jacksonville's Murilo Souza to reach the finals 2-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8. In the finals, Sahadi fell to Florida Atlantic's Lawrence Herradine 7-6 (6), 6-3.
Also in Flight B, Phil Janz fell in his opening match to Harradine 6-3, 6-2 before reaching the quarterfinal round of the consolation draw with a pair of victories.
In the Flight C Championship, Diego Martinez reached the Round of 16 before falling to North Florida's Marc Misanovic 7-6 (3), 7-5. Teammates Andrey Morozov and Maxime Zamora both dropped their opening matches in the main draw. Morozov was able to bounce back and reach the quarterfinal round of the consolation draw.
On the men's side in doubles, the team of Benjamin Chomette and Maucher fell to Florida A&M's Simbarashe Happy and Paul Paige, 9-8 (4) in Flight A.
In the Flight B Championships, the team of Janz and Mario Silva were able to reach the semifinals before falling. In their opening round match, the duo defeated Bethune-Cookman's Yannick Jackson and Stefan James, 8-5; then defeated Florida A&M's David Jackson and Forrest Jenkins, 8-5, to reach the semifinals. The duo fell to Mercer's Chapman Mitchell and Justin Wimpee 8-4 in the semifinals.
In the Flight C Championship, the team of Martinez and Morozov fell in their opening round match to Mercer's Fernando Armendaris and Mark Worsham, 8-2. The Trojans other team in the Flight C Championship, Sahadi and Zamora reached the semifinals with a pair of 8-2 victories. In the semifinals, the duo fell to South Carolina State's David Grunt and Jan Langer when they were forced to withdraw due to injury.
